Hypnos för huvudvärk och halvsidesförlamning

February 13, 2018 / Ulf Sandström / Hypnosis and coaching

Men mycket mindre.

Dalkurd to All-Swedish!

October 30, 2017 / Ulf Sandström / Mental Training

Dalkurd Makes it to the All-Swedish Top League!!!

Team peak performance and resilience : the success factors in the Dalkurd model of mental training using speedcoaching, hypnosis and a prestigeless development algorithm

The Dalkurd model of mental training was introduced by hypnotherapist and coach Ulf Sandström in mid-season for the Dalkurd FF team in Borlänge, Sweden. Following the first session the team played 31 games undefeated and continue to climb.

The model combines classic mental training in the form of mental toughness and relaxed muscle efficiency through mental relaxation with a team strategy of resilience that allows the team to pass through any losses and bounce back into a state of optimal performance where a critical mass can stay in the zone.

  • To do so a number of team strategies were developed and accepted by all members to handle the pitfalls of prestige and creating a community map with a vision every player can stand behind personally regardless of skills and personal differences in motivation. The full cooperation of the trainer at the time, Andreas Brännström, was an important factor for the implementation together will a natural trust between the team and the mental trainer.
  • To maintain a flexible inside-out empowerment a nunber of existing liaisons were identified and serve as a core unit for strategies, morale and identifying additional needs. This team had continuous support over mail and skype, minimizing the presence of the trainer, creating a sense of empowerment.
  • To guarantee each players chances of maintaining full focus in each training and game, and in sport-work-relational balance a system of speedcoaching was made available for the whole team.
Part of what seems remarkable is the efficiency in application. During a whole season the mental training efforts were fully implemented in as little as three days and a handful of personal sessions over Skype.
A workshop will shop the essential factors involved, the structure and the vital components.
  • Optimal states – definition and anchoring
  • Mental training basics
  • Understanding the zone
  • Resilience – bounding back into the zone
  • Prestige-formula
  • Mutual Vision – the vital self-programming map
  • Focusing on training the lowest level, not the highest
  • Understanding basics of the nervous system in sports and physical activities
  • Fast-techniques for reseting team spirit
  • Speed-coaching

What is good therapy?

January 15, 2015 / Ulf Sandström / Hypnosis and coaching

The English word therapy comes Greek and means “curing” or “healing”. It can be applied to a psychological outcome, such as the changing of a thought, feeling or behavior, in general, depression for example, or in a specific situation such as fear of flying.

There is a lot of historical baggage, misconception and misinterpretation about what is or isn’t possible to cure, or heal when it comes to issues of the mind, soul and spirit. All depending on who you ask.

When somebody gives up their will to fight or live, it is often referred to as a “broken spirit”. However, tinkering with the “spirit” of a person, or even recognizing that such a thing exists beyond doubt, is not part of mainstream psychological interventions. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, for example, focuses on thought processes (cognitive) and behaviors, while religion and shamanism focuses on the spirit realm, and rarely do these worlds meet in the same intent to heal, even if they can benefit so much from each other.

Mainstream psychological interventions involve the body, mainly from a mechanical biological approach by adding chemicals or electricity, a lot of the time on a trial and error basis.

So, when somebody offers healing or a cure, you may want to take a step back, and ask yourself what their belief is based on, that makes them think they can help you. Is it mechanical biology, science, religion or some other belief system? Do they consider their system to be superior to everyone else’s, and if so, what may that imply?

I believe there is no single cure that fits every person, and I am convinced that body, mind, behavior, feeling, soul and spirit are parts of the same system, and I have no problem about not being able to prove what a soul or spirit is.

I believe that self-medication with alcohol, sex, drugs, dating, gambling, over-training or religiously compulsive activity of some other sort is a sign of a troubled soul rather than a bad habit, and that change needs to come from the soul rather than the behavior used to express it.

I believe that anxiety comes in two forms: the one you can create by thinking in a specific way (consciously or unconsciously), and the one the your autonomous nervous system has conditioned as a reflex at some point, thinking that it is useful for survival, and hasn’t realized that it isn’t necessary any more (post-traumatic stress responses). They benefit greatly by being approached in different ways.

I believe good therapy is delivered by someone that is humble, curious and prepared to accept that their methods and experiences may or may not be appropriate with every new client. Prepared to make mistakes, admit them and learn from them. Prepared to be wrong, and then find out how to make it right.

Hypnotherapist Milton Erickson was asked by a client if he was sure he could help. He is told to have said “I can promise that we will solve this together, unless you give up or one of us dies trying.”

Sometimes I show this video to clients that have spent a lot of time in therapy, and still haven’t found their cure.

Sleight of Mouth – Verbal Aikido

January 11, 2015 / Ulf Sandström / Mental Training, Workshops & Talks

Sleight of Mouth is a kind of verbal Aikido – a method to confront and change arguments that was developed by Robert Dilts and Richard Bandler – today one of the people who teach it is Doug O’Brien – an experienced and skilled hypnotherapist from New York.

SleightofMouth-Formula-E

Together with Fredrik Praesto I invited Doug O’Brien over to do a workshop in Sleight of Mouth for members of the International Hypnotists Guild. The method is systematic and relatively easy to apply – and Doug is a great teacher – it is based on 16 ways to meet an argument or fundamental belief. This article is a short introduction.

Just like in Aikido, the underlying principle is to turn your opponents energi back on them, in a non-aggressive search for a way out of deadlock, opening the door to a new perspective or solution.

The framework it builds on is saying “yes” in different ways, followed by a “and” or “but” and one of the 16 possible categories of counterarguments  (intention, consequence, hierarchy etc). The structure is more or less this:

“I understand/respect/appreciate the intensity of your belief, AND/OR…”

Just like in Aikido you don’t know which of the 14 counterarguments will do the job in a give situation, the aim is to have as many pre-trained options as possible.

Here are some examples of applying Sleight of Mouth on an argument/belief/statement

Argument/belief:  “Cancer causes death”

1. Meet the intention of the argument
“I know your intention is to prevent false hope, but you are preventing any hope at all. Let’s find some alternative choices…”

2. Point at the consequence of the argument
“Beliefs like this tend to become self-fulfilling prophecies because people stop exploring their choices and options…”

3. Redefine the argument
“It’s not cancer that causes death, it’s the breakdown of the immune system, so lets explore ways to boost that…”

4. Focus on a new outcome
“The real issue isn’t what causes death, but rather what causes life and health. Let’s focus on that…”

5. Apply the argument to the argument
“That’s a pretty deadly belief to hold onto – it can only lead to a dead end street…”

6. Give a counter example
“There are many documented examples of people that have survived cancer. Actually, more people die of other causes – have you heard of anyone who had cancer and lived?”

Cobalt Lighting Controls

December 31, 2014 / Ulf Sandström / Development

cobaltLighting control is an interesting sector. Even if almost every stage in the world, from the larger opera houses, theaters, television studios, clubs, schools and houses of worship has lights to enhance the experience they offer, and even if there is a lighting control system running every one of them – it is a small world.

Cobalt is a state of the art lighting control system by Electronic Theatre Controls in Middleton, USA – designed for theatre, television and events. It is a system that I have had the opportunity, pleasure and blessing to be a part of developing on a road trip that started in the late 80’s.  I want to share my thoughts about why I feel this way.

For me, it all started with a combination of being a musician, having quit the army, which was compulsory at the time, and dating a theatre producer. I tagged along with my girlfriend at the time because she wanted to get a job with better pay than producing independent theatre, which at the time was any job. Any. She had a former technical colleague in the free arts who was working in a Swedish company run by theatre geeks and engineers, it was a pretty remarkable company in most ways – they were inventing and producing pretty awesome portable dimmers, portable sound mixers in sweet and at the time unthinkably compact aluminum cases and lighting control systems. Manual system, and something very new: memory systems. This company was AVAB – which translates into “Audio Visual technology Inc”. To make a long story short, I waited outside while she asked for a job – her friend asked her who the guy was pacing the sidewalk outside the window and she said

“Thats my boyfriend, he just came out of the military service after 18 months – he’s a musician”

“What did he do in the military?”

“He was a sergeant”

“Great, then he knows discipline and has stage experience, I’m sorry I don’t have a position for you, but tell him he can have a job in the rental services, I can use him there, we have a mess right now”

My girlfriend was maybe not thrilled, and I wasn’t really looking for a job, but when I saw all the cool equipment I thought “hey, I’m sure I’ll learn something useful here, that I can use on stage”.

My position was in the rentals department, and this was the time of the microprocessor revolution. It happened in many areas, and I was incredibly active in two at the time: synthesizers and lighting controls. Suddenly consumer prized equipment was available with professional functionality. It also meant a paradigm shift from manual lighting control to digital, from presetting to memories and memory storage – from voltage controlled dimming to multiplexed protocols. For the adventurous it was a moment of curious joyful pioneering – for those at the pinnacle of a long career where all existing tools already “did the job” it was a pain in the ass. These were the ones wanting to rent stuff – and preferably somebody who could program it for them – me.

To make a long story short, I ended up programming shows of any kind and importance during these years, and feeding back user interaction observations into the the development department, getting involved in the development and update of older systems and new ones – the 1000 channel talking Viking system – state of the art competitor to Strand Galaxy at the time – the touring 202, 201, 211, Expert series, VLC/Safari and then Presto and Pronto… during all this time AVAB became a German company called Transtechnik, and then ETC stepped in and bought both that company and AVAB. My closest colleagues in development at this time were Anders Ekvall and Bullen Lagerbielke (they still are, plus Sarah Clausen). We had been through quite a lot in terms of developing lighting controls by then – and the challenges of the market went from controlling gel changing scrollers to networking multiple workstations and moving lights. The main experience that I value is that we always have had very short iteration loops of communication in tight interaction with our users – plus being users ourselves.

Stage-Lighting-Controls-Cover2Around this time I summed up my experiences so far by interviewing major historical manufacturers and pioneers user of lighting controls I could find and summed it up in a book with the hard-to-guess-title “Stage Lighting Controls”, that still is in use in universities and schools involved in technology for performing arts. This project gave me a great chance to “geek out” into the historical reasons and development of features. This is where I realized how the different standards of the industry, like MIDI, DMX512, ACN, etc, can be driving forces of development at first and major loopholes down the road. And this is the nature of it.

When AVAB/Transtechnik came under the roof of ETC, a lot of good things happened. First of all our users suddenly had access to 24/7 worldwide support – which, in this business, is a good thing to have. Secondly we were suddenly part of an international dealer network and experience of worldwide marketing, sales, service and support for some of the most advanced lighting control systems and dimmers in the world. Yay. I felt like  a member of an indie-band that had been “promising” that suddenly found itself in Universal Studios, preparing for the next movie with a totally different infrastructure. Even cooler, this company cares about a lot of things companies usually don’t care about. Long term safety. Relations. Creativity. Thinking outside the box. Delivering the box. On time.

We got a chance to develop Congo, a hands-on control system mixing old school handles with memory speed and direct access to parameters in real time, which was received over expectations world wide, it made it into live television like the Eurovision, theatres, venue halls and houses of worship in the UK, the US and many other places – including lighting up the Burj in Dubai – which it still does, thanks to it’s versatile effects engine.

From here we moved on to develop Cobalt 20 and Cobalt 10, the current flagships with this particular DNA of fast interaction and powerful effects. The exciting thing about Cobalt is that it finally gave us a chance to house all the good stuff we learned over the years into a totally up to date hardware:

  • Direct access to any parameter or piece of data
  • Screen handles that allow adjusting all this on the fly
  • Endless potentiometers that double the amount of control handles

From here on forward. There is more in the pipeline. 🙂

The Ten Wonders of Communication

December 20, 2014 / Ulf Sandström / Mental Training, Workshops & Talks

Time 4, 8 or 16 hours (1-2 days)
Price per participator or as a package.

10606588_10152254065121373_1727196214639880426_nAn inspiring workshop in practical and creative communication skills, efficient thought processes and strategic stress management. Efficient and creative communication is the result of having the right tools and understandings about how we receive, notice, process and express thoughts in different parts of our brain. In 99 cases of 100 a stagnated communication, or a conflict, is due to the presence of hidden mind-readings and reference dissonance.

By using simple language based tools such as Clean Language, that was developed by the psychologist Dave Grove in combination with creative processes like the 3 step model of Walt Disney it is sometimes possible to reach common understanding and results in the most efficient ways – avoiding energy sapping meetings. Through the understanding and use of metaphorical communication and how we can process goals in different frames and perspectives, a team of very different and unique personalities can find common ground.

When we understand how a learning strategy is constructed and how core values and belief systems can affect our behaviors and choices, it also becomes evident how we can change them. Ulf Sandström is a mental trainer that has coached the elite football success team Dalkurd FF, Mount Everest expedition, OS-athletes and corporations with a wide variety of techniques, but also with experience of over 1000 therapeutic client sessions. Apart from this he works with First Aid for emotional- and post-traumatic stress, mainly involved in projects in Rwanda and Congo, about which he has written the book Resolving Yesterday with International Trauma Expert Gunilla Hamne – available on Amazon in December.

Every workshop is adapted to the participants, and will most probably include

  • Mindreading: a really bad concept
  • Belief systems and objective truths
  • Core values and exceptions
  • Motivation: The GPS of the soul
  • Verbal Aikido: peaceful conflict management
  • The art of saying no, creatively
  • A creative process in three steps
  • Metaphors: a simple way to common ground
  • Learning strategies, and exceptions
Ulf Sandström brings energy, experience and knowledge, and his foremost talent is to make what is taught seem simple, practical and fun.

Resolving Yesterday – New Book!

Resolving Yesterday – First Aid for Stress and Trauma with TTT

resolving-mediumThis is the book for everybody who wants a practical way to help themselves or somebody else find peace of mind (and body) in the footsteps of emotional turmoil and trauma. Me and my colleague Gunilla Hamne, from the Peaceful Heart Network, spent over two years planning and writing it based on our experiences with survivors of war and Genocide in Rwanda and Congo. We made it thanks to the help of an incredible amount of friends, colleagues, researchers, scientists, doctors, psychologists, therapists, peace workers and survivors. Thanks.

When you buy it you will find simple ways to help yourself and those around you. When you give it to somebody as a gift you are spreading the tools, and supporting our work. Thanks.

The book explains the basic causes of emotional and post-traumatic stress, and the physical and psychological symptoms it can lead to. It provides a First Aid technique to heal the symptoms that is called the Trauma Tapping Technique, TTT. TTT is easy enough to be learned by children, yet powerful enough to astound psychologists, psychiatrists and counselors as well as long time sufferers of trauma. In this book we will tell how you can use TTT to

– Treat yourself
– Treat others
– Teach and treat large groups of people that can spread it even further

The book is dedicated to the survivors of unimaginable acts of war, genocide, and emotional distress of all kinds that we have met in Chad, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Congo, Canada, Finland, South Sudan, Sweden and many other countries, thank you for your trust in allowing us to teach you how to treat yourselves and your community, thank you for proving to us that Trauma Tapping Technique (TTT) is one of the most useful tools around today for shutting down traumatic stress responses.

You have shown us that healing is possible.

Said about this book:

“What Gunilla and Ulf have masterfully done through their years of hands-on experience with the most complex of Post Traumatic Stress cases is to refine various tapping techniques into a revolutionary interventional first-aid technique that brings hope to the hopeless and self-empowerment to the powerless.

They have named it the Trauma Tapping Technique (TTT), an emotional first-aid technique that is, on the one hand, so amazingly simple, straightforward and versatile, while on the other hand, so powerful and effective as to free even the most traumatized individual from their suffering and despair, sometimes within a single 15–25 minute session, sometimes, miraculously, in even fewer minutes.

These spectacularly consistent results defy all expectations of the rational, logical, traditional mind-set which cries out, “impossible”! But Ulf and Gunilla’s results speak otherwise and affirm that these results are not only possible but probable. It reminds one of how it was once believed that to run the mile in under 4 minutes was deemed impossible until Roger Bannister came along in 1954 and for the first time ran a mile in under 4 minutes. Since that barrier was broken, it has become commonplace to run the mile in under 4 minutes.

Likewise, rapid remediation of severe trauma will become commonplace as the world becomes aware that the barrier of impossibility to speedy and permanent trauma relief has been torn down and TTT has been at the forefront of this evolution.”
